Llandrinio Carnival

Llandrinio Carnival

Llandrinio has become well-known for its Annual Carnival, a tradition which has died out in many villages throughout the country. The Carnival originated in the early 1900’s with the Punch Bowl Club when a parade of horse-drawn floats travelled to the Punch Bowl Inn.

After the War the Royal British Legion took over the event and introduced the crowning of the Llandrinio Rose Queen. Over the years it lapsed and the Village Hall Committee took over the mantle and, in the early 1970’s the fete moved to the, then, newly-purchased recreation field (the opposite side of the road from the existing one). However, as years passed, Llandrinio experienced the same problems as other areas with dwindling interest. But, not to be defeated, the Committee, in 1996, decided the fete would become a Carnival and, since then, the services of a TV celebrity have been employed to open and attend the Carnival which has made Llandrinio’s Carnival one of the best-known and well-attended in the County. With the exception of the years 1968, 2001 (both because of Foot and Mouth Disease) and 2004 (unavailability of dates) there has been a Fete/Carnival in Llandrinio annually for at least the last 60 years.

The Llandrinio Rose Queen is crowned every year at the Carnival and, in 2002, 10 past and present Rose Queens from the 1950’s to the year 2002 took part in the Parade.
